Blackhall Cottage

Day two began with 14 hours of sleep (no typo)! Take that, jet lag!! So after a wonderfully late breakfast/brunch, we had to zoom off for our daily moor-walk. Peter & Deborah took us to see a stone-circle (older than Stonehenge) and some incredible ancient granite bridges (called “clappers”) which were somehow laid across the waterways hundreds of years ago. I took photos with my better camera, so you’ll have to wait to see those later…

After a short stop in the charming little village of Chagford (for ice cream, no less) it was back to Blackhall Cottage for tea and a little rest. Now we’re just back from a splendid dinner at one their favorite pubs, where Mal & I had our first ‘real ale’ of the trip. Heaven! We were even treated to a rare spectacular sunset on the drive home (again, photos of that later)!

Here’s a photo of the entrance to Blackhall Cottage that I took yesterday. I even fixed it up a bit in the Photoshop Mobile app! Until tomorrow, enjoy…

Day one: Dartmoor

So, after a long and tiring series of flights, we have arrived at Deborah & Peter’s ‘Blackhall Cottage’ in England. After settling in, having a nice cup of tea, and watching the exciting finish to the US-Algeria World Cup game, we even had time for a short hike on the moor!

I hope to get time later to post some stories from our travels yesterday, since we had some very interesting interactions, but right now it’s time for dinner!

Travellin’ fools!

It has again been a *long* time since I last posted. I apologize, but I’ve simply had too many more pressing things on my plate. Such is life sometimes…

My wife Mallory and I are leaving today for a two-and-a-half week trip to England and Ireland, so I’ve decided to use this opportunity to do a little travel-blogging as well as to show how the iPhone can be an all-purpose travel computer.

To give you a few examples: I have all my travel documents on the phone, in an app called Good Reader, as well as our complete itinerary in one called TripTracker. I’ve used a few UK/Ireland-specific apps to do prep for the trip, and plan to use several different navigation and map apps to find our way around. Also, I’ll be using email and Skype to stay in touch with friends and family back home. There’s a lot of chatter online about the potential high-cost of using an iPhone overseas, but I’ve signed up for about $30 worth of extra coverage that should handle all my needs, based on my last few month’s usage. We shall see!

I hope to be able to post daily, depending on available Internet (I’ll be trying to use WiFi as much as possible to keep my data usage manageable). And if I was using a laptop instead, it would likely be my only option!

Anyway, keep checking back over the next few weeks; I look forward to reading your responses!
